Save Our Freedom to Carry Zippo Lighters on Airlines sign now

Air travelers have been safely traveling with their Zippo lighters since Zippo was founded in 1932. But, effective April 14, 2005 YOU MAY NO LONGER TRAVEL WITH YOUR ZIPPO LIGHTER.

Why ban lighters from airplanes NOW, particularly Zippo lighters?

As you might know, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 included an amendment, which directed the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to ban all butane lighters from the passenger cabin of all commercial aircraft. Zippo lighters do not use or contain butane but are nonetheless being swept into this new rule, which has been expanded to include all lighters.

As you might also know, an outdated Department of Transportation / Federal Aviation Administration (DOT/FAA) rule, unenforced until after 9/11, is preventing you and me from putting our lighters in checked baggage. There has never been an explosion directly related to lighters in checked bags and testing performed by Zippo engineers, as well as investigations by the Lighter Association, show no evidence which points to lighters, filled or empty, being hazardous in checked baggage. The FAA and DOT themselves admit there have been no incidents involving Zippo lighters in the United States.

Prior to the issuance of this law, the Department of Transportation allowed each passenger to bring two lighters into the cabin, either on their person, or in their carry-on baggage. The DOT would still allow that, but the TSA is banning them.

The following steps by the Department of Transportation and the Transportation Security Administration would enable Zippo customers to continue to enjoy air travel with their lighters:

1. An immediate DOT exemption to allow two already filled lighters per checked bag.

2. A TSA announcement allowing properly labeled new, never filled lighters to be checked.

3. A ninety-day window during which new lighters would be allowed in checked bags in their original packaging without a special label by the TSA.

4. Sale of new, never filled lighters in Duty Free and other stores within airport secure areas.

These minor exemptions by the Department of Transportation and the Transportation Security Administration will have no impact on safety, are easily enforced by the government, and will provide the flying public the freedom they need and deserve

Please, sign this petition and also contact your elected officials and the Administrations decision makers on these issues NOW to tell them what you think about regulations that deprive you of your freedom to travel with your Zippo lighter.
