Save Ormsgill Reservoir sign now

Around the beginning of the year work was carried out by a contractor for Barrow Borough Council to replace the drainage pipe. In order to carry out this work the Ormsgill Reservoir was half drained. The work was completed at around three months yet the reservoir has not been refilled and as a consequence of the drainage the wildlife has suffered drastically. The marine life in the Reservoir has been devastated from a lack of oxygen and many fish are now dead. The two islands on the Reservoir - which are a sanctuary for nesting birds - are now accessible to vandals, and nests and eggs have been destroyed and damaged. Several species of birds used this habitat: mallards, Canada Geese, and swans amongst others; but as the water table remains low, and the nesting sites mutilated by the vandalism, many birds are seeking their food and sanctuary in other areas.

In the past work had been carried out to plant trees, make pathways and install wooden fencing for people to enjoy the Reservoir and with the help of the Ormsgill community, Thorncliffe school children and community services, a massive clean-up campaign was carried out. All of these amenities have been damaged by the drainage construction work and should be restored.

We are circulating this petition to demand immediate action is taken by the Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria County Council to restore Ormsgill Reservoir to its former glory, as before the works began. We want those responsible for the devastation of the wildlife to be made answerable and disciplined.

Please support and protect the wild life and natural beauty of Ormsgill Reservoir and help us retain its former glory!

Someone must be held answerable for the unnecessary ruination to this area of pleasure and the shameful offence to the local wildlife. Shocking!

I've just seen the photos on the web page. I used to walk here as a child and can't believe that the Council has allowed things to fall into this terrible state. Mel (now in Canada).
