Dear Sir/Madam,

We the undersigned request that you, as an independent body, safeguard the future development of the Cooley Peninsula, uphold the integrity of EU habitat directives and defend the long term planning principles of the National Spatial strategy, by refusing planning permission for the proposed construction of a new commercial port on Carlingford Lough.

Transport links at Greenore are inadequate. The proposed development will result in a massive increase in HGV traffic on the R173/R175 road, a national scenic route, increasing the risk to all road-users. There are no rail links present.

The proposed development would in effect sandwich the unique Victorian Railway village of Greenore between two commercial ports, blighting the lives of residents and pushing the community into terminal decline.

The proposed location for the development is heavily protected both nationally and internationally. The site is designated an SPA (Special Protection Area), an SAC (Special Area of Conservation), a pNHA (proposed Natural Heritage Area), an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), a National Heritage Site and in waters protected under the European Communities (Quality of Shellfish Waters) Regulations.

The proposed development would represent a significant danger to both the fast-growing Tourist Industry of the Cooley Peninsula and the internationally renowned Aquaculture Industry on Carlingford Lough.

Drogheda Port Companys proposal to construct a world-class deepwater port, logistics centre and business park at Bremore, a green-field site located just north of Balbriggan is specifically supported by the National Spatial strategy. This alternative site is rail-linked, adjacent to the M1 motorway and 15 minutes from the M50 motorway, it represents a better long-term alternative to increase port capacity on the east coast of Ireland.

The future development of Carlingford Lough and the historical Victorian Village of Greenore will be determined by the Boards decision on this application.

We place our faith in your independence and believe that long-term strategic national interests should always prevail above short-term commercial opportunism.
