Save Cheap Flights! sign now

Environment Minister Ian Pearson has launched and outspoken attack on airlines and has labelled budget airline Ryanair as irresponsible for opposing EU plans to cut carbon emissions.

Under the EU scheme all airlines flying within Europe will be charged for exceeding their current levels of emissions. The initiative will be effective by 2011 and then expanded to include all international flights that arrive or depart from an EU airport.

Ryanair has insisted Mr Pearson is misinformed and say they have introduced fuel efficient engines. Some US airlines are considering legal action to overturn the EUs efforts.

Airline emissions count for less than 2\% of global carbon output, and for the first time in human history, you don't have to be particularly rich to travel and see the wonders of the world. Cheap flights are a major boon to our quality of life. Even green-groups admit that taxing tickets has no effect on passenger numbers - hence governments see it as a cash-cow whilst looking green.
and aviation accounts for a mere 2\% of CO2 emissions. Enormous efforts have been invested in making modern turbofan engines economical and quiet, and they undergo rigorous testing and certification. Don't forget that people fly because it is cost effective to do so, despite sky-high fuel costs. There are far worse polluters and aviation makes far more effort than most.
Again it is those on low incomes that will suffer the most. Priced out of driving, priced off trains and now priced off planes - why should they be denyed the right to fly? Air travel is for everyone. We urge everyone in the UK and beyond who values their right to travel to support our campaign to keep cheap flights cheap.
