Save BBC Hindi sign now

After a long, long time, I feel angry, lost and helpless.

Sometimes certain things feel so below-the-belt, so unbecoming of a civil society that you tend to sit back and think whether or not we live in a free state, and whether or not we can take our little acts of freedom for granted.

BBC Hindi, since its inception in 1941, has been a beacon of infotainment for classes and the masses. For remote, rural India it has been the sole connect to global happenings and news, in their own tongue.

It saddens us deeply to see that BBC is planning to pull the plug on the same having already reduced the programming from 4 daily programmes to a one hour report. This, according to BBC, is to facilitate a much needed annual budget cut and to justify the same the conglomerate talks about minimal audience (which is around 10 million in number, according to RAM ratings in India) and prohibitive expenses of transmission.

I would like to quote the articles below to establish how the above point is erroneous to say the least:

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201011/cmselect/cmfaff/uc849-i/ws34.htm
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/reduced-bbc-hindi-service-will-affect-millions-critics-say-2254781.html
http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/vikram-seth-flagship-without-a-fleet-2254867.html

This is where, I feel concerned and you should too, as discerning world citizens of today! When did news become an expensive commodity? When did an utterly flawed Radio audience rating scheme become the end all and be all of an institution like the BBC World Services?

I feel it is sad that we deprive millions of our indigenous folks of the information and knowledge they rightfully deserve. It reeks of colonialism and it wrongfully depicts, that information today is confined to the twitter-happy fingers of yore!
