SAPS Brutality against our women and children sign now

The crime statistics provided in the Independent Complaints Directorates Annual Report for 2008/09 indicated 406 criminal offences were committed by police officers in Gauteng, and a further 25 rapes were committed by police officers nationally.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, Section (12) (1c) of Chapter 2 determines that: Everyone has the right to freedom and security of the person, which includes the right to be free from all forms of violence from either public or private sources.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 Section 205 (3) of Chapter 11 states that: The objects of the police service are to prevent, combat and investigate crime, to maintain public order, to protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property, and to uphold and enforce the law.

According to crime statistics provided in the Independent Complaints Directorates Annual Report for 2008/09 406 criminal offences were committed by police officers in Gauteng, and a further 25 rapes were committed by police officers nationally.

On 25 October 2009 a 29-year-old mother of three was allegedly repeatedly raped by two uniformed policemen in Kempton Park, while her husband was in police custody.

Believing that:

The greater majority of police officers employed by the South African Police Service give full expression to the above Constitutional responsibilities, at great risk to their own lives and safety.

These brave police officers do not deserve to have their credibility tarnished by the few who do not take their Constitutional responsibilities and the oath that they have sworn seriously.

It is imperative that all citizens of South Africa and all foreign visitors to our country have complete faith in the SAPS and its police officers.

Therefore:

We the undersigned citizens of the Republic of South Africa call on the SAPS to:

Take immediate measures to investigate the alleged 25 October rape of a 29-year-old women at the hands of police officers in Kempton Park.

Take measures to ensure that this investigation is conducted with the utmost transparency and accountability with regards to the victim, her family, the residents of Kempton Park and all South Africans.

Ensure that the investigation is conducted in such a manner as to cause the least amount of inconvenience to the victim, her family and friends.

Ensure that the guilty parties in this crime are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
