Rockoff Hall Parking sign now

We, the undersigned, are residents of the newest dormitory at Rutgers University, Rockoff Hall. The purpose of this petition is to attempt to reach a compromise in the amount being charged for students to park in the Rockoff Hall parking deck.

Prior to the signing of contracts for housing in Rockoff Hall many students were not properly informed of the actual cost of parking in the adjacent deck. Most were told that parking would be provided, and no where on the website or information given to many students did it list the cost of parking in the adjacent deck. After contracts were signed and an announcement of the parking rates was received, some students were informed that they would not be allowed out of their contracts; even though they would not have signed them having known this was the situation.

In addition, when we were informed by Rutgers that there will be no place for us to park even remotely close to our residence, only fifty spaces were raffled off on Cook campus, in a lot which happens to be the furthest parking lot available on the entire campus, to get there would take a bus and a ten minute walk. Those who werent lucky enough to receive a spot on Cook are forced to park on Livingston or Busch campus, a trip that will take a ride on two different busses to reach the destination.

Students residing at Rockoff are upset about this for a number of reasons. Although as residents of Rockoff Hall we pay more for housing than any other Rutgers residents (up to $200 a month more than comparable on campus housing), we are the only ones who do not have an adjacent, nor even close lot to park in provided by the university. Most college students, especially those paying more for their rooms, cannot afford such an extravagant amount such as $145 a month for parking, when all other Rutgers students pay less than that for an entire semester. Also, many students work in order to put themselves through school or to support themselves while they are here, and need their cars to get to work. If this situation stays the way it is now, this adds another hour on to anyones commute just to get to their car. In addition, busses stop running after a certain time, and during many times of the year, including weekends, breaks, and winter sessions, bus runs are drastically cut back, making the wait for one bus (let alone two) even longer.

We are more than willing to work together to try and reach a compromise through any number of means. All we ask is to be treated fairly, and to work together to be able to park in the adjoining parking deck at a reasonable rate.
