Ring Comm Petition sign now

We find with utmost concern that Ring Comm is blatantly not, as it claims to be, "diverse." Your assertion that "because the Ring Committee must understand and evaluate the interests of the entire class body, it is important that they represent a diversity of living groups, MIT departments and organizations, lifestyles, and backgrounds" seems to have been entirely disregarded in the Ring Comm selection process. In our opinion, "diverse" implies - among other things - that the committee represents a maximum number of the living groups. Clearly this has not been accomplished. East Campus, Senior House, Random Hall, and Bexley are all completely unrepresented on Ring Comm, whereas other living groups are disproportionately represented. Considering that the ring is meant for the entire 2011 class, this is extremely disappointing.

More importantly, in light of recent information about the selection process, we have come to believe it is critically flawed. The first tool for evaluating potential committee members was Section III of the RingComm application, which asks for ideas about what to put on the ring, what would have made the class hoodie better, and so forth. This section, while relevant, does not contain anything regarding the skills and experiences of the applicant.

Section II, on the other hand, contains vital information about personal talents (e.g., artistic or design skills, the ability to use certain computer programs, experience with working on committees) that an individual can offer, which seem far more important in the selection. According to the Council, however, this information was not considered until many of the applicants had already been discarded from consideration. The fact is, the selection process was essentially backward: you did not take into account the applicants' objective skills and experiences until you had already severely limited the field, based upon the subjective criteria of Section III.

As such, we feel the selection process was flawed to begin with in terms of selecting an appropriate group to decide the design of our class's ring. By this alone we have doubts that RingComm is the best it could be, and feel hesitant to endorse it as such.

However, we must point out that the makeup of the committee as a whole is, in many regards, more important than its individual members. You yourself admitted, in an email to our class, that most of the applicants were "perfectly suitable" to sit on RingComm. With a total of twelve members on the committee, it is clear that you had room to both create a "diverse" and representative RingComm and include applicants based on their specific skills.

The bottom line is that we are not happy. This is our ring, our school, and most certainly our issue. If we feel that something is wrong in the ring design process, it must be addressed. We elected you, as a Council, to represent the interests of our entire class. Our opinion must be accounted for. We feel that at the very least, RingComm must have additional members added. Considering the flawed nature of the selection process however, this is not enough. Therefore we, the undersigned students, demand that a complete redesign of the committee be undertaken.
