Retain Smurfit School's Careers Service sign now

We would like to express our deep concerns over the projected abolishment of the position of a Careers Advisor and its subsequent dismantling of the services and support currently offered by the Careers Service.

Although we recognise the need for the Smurfit School to make savings, we do not agree that the schools long-term purpose is served by dismantling Smurfits Careers Service. This service meets the specific career needs of masters-level business students, and is a requisite of a world-class repudiated MBA and other business master programmes.

The functions of the Careers Service, including but not limited to improving CV writing and interviewing skills, career exploration and profiling, advertising and filling competitive work opportunities, and coordinating recruiting and networking events benefit more than just students. Businesses, leaders and alumni seeking successive generations of businesspeople rely upon Smurfit graduates. Without a networking and recruiting liaison, Smurfit School will erode the network it has taken years to build.

Students will not be able to develop themselves for hire without researching and understanding what is sought in the job market, which comes best from direct contact with outside business and hiring representatives. It is imperative that these representatives be able to meet their hiring needs within Ireland. Disconnecting the students from a Careers Service center is disconnecting the business world from Smurfit students.

We ask the powers that be to please reconsider the budgetary decision to cut such services in the name of preserving and protecting the long-term reputation of quality in Smurfits programmes and its graduates.

It's very unfortunate that Niall has to leave, he was a great help to me with careers advice and its a real blow for the current and future students of Smurfit to lose this service.

Suspension of the Career Services Center and its staff will be very detrimental to the affected students. This must be retained to provide adequate career guidance and preparation.

A full time career service was one of the main selling points that was used when I signed up to the MIM course last year.

The well publicised "all singing and dancing" Smurfit careers service was a key factor in my choice of college. Considering the high fees charged for my course, I'm very annoyed at this decision and would not recommend the Smurfit Business School to anyon
