Restore NJ Education Funding sign now

Governor Christie claimed that he fully supported New Jerseys students and teachers, pledging to deliver the best possible educations to the children. Now, funding is being slashed at much greater levels than anticipated, leaving schools wounded and scrambling to make up for the loss. At my school, Kittatinny Regional High School, freshman athletics and 10 student activities have been cut, and class sizes are set to increase because new teachers will not be hired after retirees leave this year. Yet, we are one of the lucky ones. Sussex County Technical School is to lose 9 teachers, three instructional aides, three permanent substitute teachers, and their vice principal. Not only that, but their pool, which 6 local swim teams use, will be closed. Moreover, think of poorer urban schools, some of which depend on state aid for over 90\% of their budgets. What will happen to them?

Education funding was supposed to be a top priority. The governor stated, We need to make sure that the money that we are spending gets to the classroom, gets to the children, so that they can learn and have a limitless future. But since he took office, over one billion dollars in funding have been cut. Why? This is all for tax reform, but lets be honest: the amount of money the average tax payer will save will be negligible, just enough to buy some silly, pointless object at Walmart. Is that all we are worth? Is that all it takes to buy us?

Open your eyes! We, the students, are the ones directly affected. We are the next generation of thinkers, the next job holders, the future leaders, and the future voters. Now we are taking a stand. These cuts are nothing but harmful to our education, and are certainly not aiding the schools in providing each student with a limitless future.

We, the undersigned, demand that funding to schools be restored before the damage already done becomes a permanent scar on a generation of students.

Its time for change, Mr. Christie. Times may be tough, but this is NOT the solution.
