Request to the Indian government to revive the Indian R & D industry sign now

This is an appeal to all Indians, both living in India and abroad. It is a well known fact that our country has produced some of the most eminent scientists like JC Bose, Ramanaujan, Homi Bhaba and many others. However, in the recent years students prefer to study engineering, medicine, and other disciplines rather than pure science. Quite a number of disturbing reasons can be cited for this. For one, the amount of funds invested in the R & D industry is very mearge as compared to the others. Secondly, the number of seats for MSc is very low in almost all regions and thus maximum number of students after passing BSc either go into other areas of study like M.Tech or IAS or go in to business studies like MBA. I can provide a rather wonderful example to this. In West Bengal, there are about a total of 150-200 seats in all the colleges combined (except Jadavpur University) for BSc per stream. For MSc, there are only 50 seats per stream in Calcutta University. So we can draw the ultimatum that for most of these students there is no future in the R & D industry. Another important factor is money. Like I have mentioned previously, there is a huge gap of funding. Professors in Patna hardly get paid every six months. In West Bengal, professors in Presidency College get paid every six months instead of every month. Hence, it is no wonder that students do not wish to study science in the General stream because scientists or not, everybody has got to feed himself and his family.

Through this petition, I wish to convey the message to the Indian government and particularly to Prof (Dr) Abdul Kalam (since he is a scientist himself) that they please look into the matter and let students who wish to take up research as a career fulfil their dreams in this very country, the scientists of which have given birth to some of the greatest inventions and discoveries.
