Request to revise selection criteria for future Spring Fling Performers sign now

Although we, like the University of Pennsylvania, endorse free speech, we believe that there are certain messages that are appropriate to endorse and others that are not.

Particularly in light of the recent episodes of sexual violence at Penn, it is particularly inappropriate to invite and financially compensate Mr. Cordozar Broadus (A.K.A. Snoop Dogg) to headline the 2010 Spring Fling concert. Snoop Dogg is at the forefront of a movement in the music industry that promotes the domination and degradation of women. In his song Aint no fun, Snoop discusses his possession and subsequent disposal of a womens body. He sings: now the pussys mine, Ima fuck a couple more times/And then Im through with it, theres nothing else to do with it/Pass it to the homie, now you hit it/Cause she aint nuthin but a bitch to me/And yall know, that bitches aint shit to me. Accompanying Snoop is Kid Cudi, whose song Poke Her Face brags I put em in your mouth till you choke and gag, and I Poke Her Face off and now she faceless, I poke her so much I deserve a bracelet.

While Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi are only the most recent such artists to be invited by Penn for Spring Fling, he joins a history of other offensive artists to perform at our annual concert. Just last year, Akon taught us how to Smack that, all on the floor, smack that give me some more, smack that till you get sore. A few years back, Ludacris came to campus and shared his thoughts on the value of women: Its okay to check in that Motel 6 / $59.95, not a cent more, for that dirty-ass ho."

The problem is not rap there are some very positive messages shared by many rap artists. There are also some equally offensive artists in other genres. The problem also does not reside entirely in the content of their music either individuals can say what they please and Penn students can choose to listen to what they please. SPEC, you should continue to choose Spring Fling artists who cater to the musical tastes of the Penn undergraduate community; however, you should recognize that you make a significant statement with how you choose to spend our schools money. For future Spring Flings, we ask that you consider what kind of values we as an institution support and look for artists that exemplify those values. SPEC, it is time for you to consider changing your selection criteria for Spring Fling performers. We are sick of sitting back and watching Penn promote this abusive and offensive treatment of women.

Think of the money spent on Spring Fling as advocacy. The tens of thousands of dollars going into Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudis pockets are essentially counteracting the anti-sexual violence efforts of Penn student groups like One-in-Four, The Vagina Monologues and ASAP (Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention). In a few short weeks, assuming that Fling attendance is the same as last year, our campus will rally over 7,000 students at Franklin Field to stand outside for a few hours, chant along the lyrics to songs such as Break a Bitch Til I Die. Yet earlier this semester, only 1,553 Penn affiliates took 30 seconds to sign a petition to make the Hospital of the University a rape-designated hospital. What is wrong with this picture?

In the future, we ask SPEC to exert increased scrutiny over the messages and behaviors supported by Spring Fling artists.
