Request to Change "Pay-to-Participate" at SHS sign now

In the aftermath of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, many families are still struggling to make ends meet. However, the Scarborough Board of Education has decided to implement a $50 per club, per student fee for the 2010-2011 school year. With a healthy economy, this strategy may be better received by the public as a way to make up for a $100,000 budget gap. However, the Board of Education needs to fill this gap in a better accepted way than the $50 fee. Thus, we agree upon the following alternative--which not only has the potential to make up the remainder of the budget gap and then some, but is more financially acceptable to those affected.

Our alternative consists of keeping the proposed $100 per sport fee in place but completely eliminating the $50 per club per student fee which is currently in place as well, for we are only requesting a change in the activity fee, not the sport fee.

We would like to add a $35 Student Access Fee that will be charged to all students. This fee will replace the current fee and will allow students to receive their Student I.D., which is already given to students when school pictures arrive in October. The I.D. will serve the purpose of allowing all students to participate in any school clubs and will also give students a way to enter school games and performances as a student, which often allows them to receive a cheaper student ticket. This card will also identify students who attend Homecoming and Prom, allowing the coordinators of that event to keep track of who has entered the dance or not.

As soon as the Student Access Fee is paid at the beginning of the year, access to clubs and activities is instantaneous, the card is only required for attendance of games, performances, and dances (though the card from the previous year is acceptable until new cards are issued).

Many people will argue against this fee for the same reasons we had requested the $50 per club per student fee to be removed. However, because of the fact that it is a school-wide fee, anyone who has trouble paying it would be allowed to confidentially request aid from S.A.A.F.--the Student Aid Assistance Fund.

We, the undersigned, are asking that this particular fee structure be adopted immediately and that the previous structure be deserted so that families will not be faced with difficulty making ends meet.
