Rename the park in Merrion Square after Oscar Wilde sign now

On 10th May 2010, the South East Committee of Dublin City Council decided to recommend to the full Council that the park in Merrion Square be renamed.

This was in response to a public consultation process in April 2010. The vast majority of the 567 respondents to an advertisement placed by the Council were in favour of renaming the park, which is currently named "Archbishop Ryan Park".

---

However, people were also asked to suggest names for the park. The results were reported as follows, in the Irish Times of 7th May, 2010:

"Oscar Wilde is the clear favourite for a new name with 219 backing him. Brigit Park/Square/Gardens is backed by 113 who replied to the advert, the name Merrion Arts Garden is favoured by 98 and just reinstating the old name of Merrion Square was suggested by 45 people."

The Dublin South East committee has, apparently, decided to ignore the results of the second question of the consultation process, and recommend the option that was only favoured by 45 people, to the full Council meeting on 14th June 2010.

---

We call on Dublin City Council to acknowledge that the preferred choice of name for the park, by those who partook in the consultation process, was Oscar Wilde.

We call on the Council to respect the wishes expressed in that process, and name the park after Oscar Wilde.

City Dublin lets properly commemorate our past artistic and literary heroes, whilst reminding ourselves of the art that exists today, and the potential for it to exist tommorrow. Thank you.

City Toronto On my many visits to Dublin I always try to make time to pop by the park in Merrion Square and admire the incredible statue of Oscar Wilde. It seems to be a 'no-brainer' to me to name the park that houses the statue of one of Dublin's finest

City Dublin I think that the people of Dublin would be immensely proud to have this park named after this flamboyant witty and talented playwright, poet and author.

City Dublin Merrion Square Park is a hideously boring name. And why are you ignoring the wishes of the people who contacted you with their suggestions?
