Rename the American Pit Bull Terrier sign now

Dear Sirs,

Weve taken the dog out of the pits, now it is time to take the pit out of the dog.

I understand the need to remember the past; however immortalizing a blood sport by continuing to use the name Pit Bull is something else entirely. Pit fighting has been illegal in most states for over 100 years, and the last few states that did allow it, stopped over 30 years ago. There is no reason to continue to cling to a name that signifies an illegal and immoral practice.

I propose the name of the American Pit Bull Terrier should be changed to the Seneca Terrier. My reasons for proposing this name are: the number-one most vocal proponent working to restore the pit bulls good reputation is the middle-class white woman. The old dogmen arent coming forward in courts to defend a pit bulls character or combat breed specific laws; the young thugs and punks determined to own a tough dog are doing nothing to stem the vast tide of poorly bred mutts masquerading as pit bulls, nor are they working to adopt out and save pit bulls that are clogging shelters across the United States. No, the vast majority of visible pit bull supporters are female. Thus the name Seneca Terrier, named after the Womens Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, NY in 1848.

This is not an attempt to run from the stigma this breed faces, but an attempt to pay tribute to those who have come forward to defend it.

Thank you.

(After all, if they can change the name of the Jack Russel Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier can change too.)
