Remove Article 40.6.1 i (Blasphemy) from Bunreacht na hЙireann sign now

We, the undersigned, express our sincere concern about the proposed amendment to the Defamation Bill (2006).

We find the continuation of powers of search and seizure for members of the Gardaн Siochana relating to material containing blasphemous libel - if necessary by force - extremely objectionable.

Furthermore, we are strongly opposed to any impediment, constitutional or statutory, on the free expression of ideas and opinions which are not intentionally libellous or slanderous to another citizen. The constitutional provision regarding blasphemy can, in my opinion only serve to impinge on these freedoms to our common detriment.

We support the conclusions of The Constitutional Review Group (1996) and the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution (2008) who have both recommended the deletion of Article 40.6.1.i of the Constitution, as has the Law Reform Commission (1991). We call on the Minister for Justice to remove the provisions from the forthcoming Defamation Bill and support a referendum removing Article 40.6.1 i from Bunreacht na hЙireann.
