A Petition to Release Poet Axel Pinpin and Community Teacher Angie Ipong

As writers, artists, cultural workers, students and educators, we demand the release of poet Axel Alejandro Pinpin and sculptor, painter, and community teacher Angie Bisuсa Ipong. Our two fellow cultural workers are imprisoned by the Macapagal-Arroyo military regime in direct violation of their human rights.

Axel Pinpin was abducted by elements of the Philippine National Police with four other peasant organizers on April 28, 2006, in Tagaytay City, Cavite. Collectively known as the Tagaytay 5, they were all hidden by their abductors for three days after the arrest. The five were accused of plotting to destabilize the national government. They suffered physical and mental torture while under detention. Pinpin is a consultant and research and information officer of the peasant organization Kalipunan ng mga Magsasaka sa Kabite (Kamagsasaka-Ka). He served as a science research specialist in the Department of Science and Technology from 1996 to 2000. Pinpin was a Fellow in 1999 for Poetry in Filipino at the University of the Philippines Institute for Creative Writing and has published a poetry collection, Tugmaang Walang Tugma.

Angie Bisuсa Ipong was arrested on International Womens Day, March 8, 2005, by men claiming to be police officers. She was dragged, blindfolded, transferred from Anastacia Mision Village in Misamis Occidental to various places, and held incommunicado for two weeks. Ipong was charged with rebellion and a triple murder case. At 62, she was subjected to torture and sexual assault. Ipong conducted education programs in various communities, especially among women and the indigenous groups. In prison, she facilitates livelihood programs with inmates to remain productive. Ipong has dedicated most of her life in the peoples everyday need for empowerment teaching literacy, livelihood programs and basic human rights. The cruel thing is that the government has been single-mindedly trying to crush her resolve by letting her rot in prison after the case has been publicized.

We declare our strongest condemnation of political repression of writers and artists serving the interest of the Filipino people.

We call on writers, cultural workers, educators, journalists, and all concerned to support this petition TO RELEASE AXEL PINPIN AND ANGIE IPONG. Our steadfast fight against all violations of the freedom of speech, assembly, the press and the struggle for freedom itself heed your help in making this issue more widely known.
