Regarding the vacancy of a programme leader for the BA Scriptwriting for Film and Television sign now

Dear Professor Paul Curran

We, as students of the BA Scriptwriting for Film and Television course, are very concerned about the selection of our new programme leader, after the retirement of John Foster who upheld that position. We are aware of the Universitys policy to only select accademically accomplished lecturers with an approved experience in accademic research and thus at least a PhD. It is understandable that the university is eager to consolidate it's achievements and strengthen its reputation by means of increased research and we can see the benefits in this policy for students in especially research driven subjects.

Nevertheless, our course and others within the media school are somewhat different. First and foremost, the excellent reputation of the media school comes from it's close connection to the media and it's professionally high experienced lecturers. This connection produced graduates that have succesfully entered the highly competitive world of the media industry.

The uniqueness and quality of our course derives from our industry experienced lecturers that can prepare the students for the tough demands of the professional media industry. The reason we as students chose this course is because we wanted to become writers. Theory can help to enrich the writing process but eventually it comes down to experience. Our lecturers have been a tremendous help, not only to us, but for hundreds of succesful students due to their thoughtful and practice oriented tutoring and teaching.

We fear that with a new programme leader, selected under the premise of having received a doctorate, the quality of our course will decrease. Candidates will most likely have high academic standards in regards to media research, but lack the professional experience and expertise that is required for the job. Furthermore this would not only damage the reputation of the course but over time that of the university.

The university's current selection criteria for the post contradicts its values as stated in the corporate plan. If Bournemouth University really is 'student-centered' and 'geared to the professions', as we have experienced so far, then our concerns for the relevance of professional experience and expertise of our future course leader should be taken into consideration.

We ask you to overthink the university policy in this matter and hope you make a decision benefitting the students, the course and the university.
