R-rated movies at SBHS sign now

To Members of South Brunswick Board of Education,

We, the undersigned, fundamentally disagree with the South Brunswick Board of Educations new policy concerning R-rated movies. Although we understand the reasoning behind the change, we feel that the new requirement is too broad and undermines the teachers ability at the high school level to effectively use a multimedia approach to teaching. Many R-rated movies are educationally rewarding because they probe complex and ambiguous issues for a mature audience that other movies deemed appropriate for adolescents present in generalizations. Also, R-rated movies tend to be more artistic and intellectually rewarding than a PG-13 movie, whose main intent is to entertain rather than challenge. Both of the movies currently on the English Departments curriculum for juniors and seniors, The Deer Hunter and The Graduate are R-rated, as are many of the films shown in both film analysis classes at the school.

Only a teacher or parent can accurately gauge a students maturity level and make the judgment call on whether an R-rated movie is appropriate for that student or that class. A distant administrator cannot as easily judge a classs maturity, and could just as easily approve a film for an immature class as deny an educationally sound movie for a mature one. Additionally, Mr. Matheneys job is busy enough as is trying to manage a school with the population of a small town; he does not need to review lesson plans and movies from teachers in every department whenever they want to show an R-rated film.

We hereby petition the South Brunswick Board of Education to alter the current R-rated movie policy to exempt the high school from its requirements or, at the very least, to require parental approval for all students below age 16. We feel that the Board should not close options for their teachers in their pursuit to educate the future leaders in every discipline of our country.
