Put the Grades on the Board sign now

For many years, the British and American Studies office of Liberal Arts Faculty of the Thammasat University, had allowed its students to know their grades by posting it on the bulletin board outside the office. This system although seems old-fashioned in comparison to the online grade checking system via the universitys website, yet it has proven effective all along. The old-fashioned posting of the grades had allowed students to know their grades within a week or two after the examination. On the other hand, it takes too much time for the grades to go from the BAS office to office of registrar and it takes more time for the registrar to post it up on the web. The fastness of the old system had proved very beneficial while the new system is causing problems.

First of all the less period of time for the students to know their grades means reduced time of anticipation and stress that comes along with not knowing what their grades are. Along with the knowledge of their grades students can plan for their future. For the underclassmen they will be able to plan their future at BAS whether it be what subjects they should enroll next, what they should do next to get a scholarship, or to participate in an exchange program. For the seniors their grades are crucial for their next step in life whether if they will be able to graduate, to enter the workforce, or to pursue further studies. Furthermore it is undeniable that mistakes do occur from time to time concerning grades due to human error. The ability to know ones grades within a short moment had allowed students to spot any variances, and contact the professor quickly to correct any grading mistakes or get explanations for their grades. When mistakes occur it is best to solve it as soon as possible. For things are still fresh in both the minds of the students and the professors. In addition it is very common for the students and professors to go abroad or to the countryside during the summer break. The earlier students are able to detect any mistakes the better it is in order to avoid students and/or professors to be out of reach.

If the students still have to wait for many weeks or months for the grades to be posted online many problems will occur. The longer it takes the longer it is for the students to undergo anticipation and stress. Students will not be able to plan ahead as soon as possible. This may cause numerous effects from making the wrong decisions to making the right decisions when it is too late. When grades problems occurs students and professors cannot solve it immediately. This may lead to the inability to solve problems in time for the graduating seniors to hand in their transcript to their employer or institutions for their masters degree. Furthermore the technological advantage of the online grade system may also be its downside. It cannot be guaranteed that the universitys server will not go down prior or after grades posting. Moreover students may not necessarily be in areas where internet is available when the grades are posted, thus it will take additional time for the students to know their grades.

The office and its staffs are responsible for coordinating between the university, the professors, and most importantly the students. Recently the office had undergone many changes. New staffs are employed, directors are replaced, new rules and regulations are imposed, and the way things had been run had been changed. These changes are debatable whether it has brought BAS betterment. However it is a fact that a role of the office is to facilitate and assist the students. In other words, the purpose of the office and the staffs in it is to serve the students. Yet the change in grade notice system is causing the students problems that did not exist beforehand.

We are concerned with the problems that the time-consuming-online-grade-posting are causing. Time is valuable to us. It is a basic right for the students to know their grades. What we are requesting for is for the grades to be posted on the bulletin board outside the office again. We know we are not asking an impossible task from the office because the office staffs had been doing so for many years. We also know that it is not a difficult task for the office staffs to do either, since all the staffs have to do is print out an extra copy of the grades to post on the board, in addition to the copy to be sent to the registrar. We would like the grades to be posted on the bulletin board again. We ask the office to act now.
