Protest against 50\% Reservations in IITs and IIMs sign now

Dear All,

As you all will be aware, the Ministry of HRD, Govt of India, headed by Arjun Singh, is planning to increase the reservations based on caste in premier institutions like IIT and IIM and other Central Universities to 49.5\% (The only reason it cannot go beyond 50\% is because of an SC guideline that prevents it from doing so).

The Govt should answer the following questions before implementing the decision:
1) Why is this decision being taken in such a hurry? And that too, just before the elections in UP, TN and other states?

2) Is there a statistic on the economic status of the socially backward castes? For eg: the Yadavs who fall under OBCs are now a power to reckon with in Bihar and UP and have amassed a lot of wealth, and so also in other statesIf there is a statistic, we need to know it now, through the media

3) How will the Govt, esp Arjun Singh, guarantee the nation, and especially its students that the quality of these institutes and their international reputation will not be affected by this decision? How is the Government going to stem the mediocrity in these institutions and stop Indias brainpower, already in a state of outflow, from rushing to the American and European Universities?

4) Is the Government trying to generate a Caste identity and divide the society on basis of Caste? If no, the Government should explain how this step will bring about Equality. Let the Minister face the media and the people.

And why is the media, that was so active when Dr Murli Manohar Joshi decreased the IIT and IIM fees, so quiet now?? Why are stories of Bipashas white gown given more prominence than such a gross attempt to murder the development of our country!!

A honorable Member of Parliament, speaking during the 1999 debate on the 79th Amendment in the XIII Lok Sabha, which extended reservations for SC/STs in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies for another ten years, said that '... if you want different societies to come together, I think it is time that we decide that the use of the word 'caste' ... be banned in this country.' This person was none other than Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The time for inactivity is now pastif we dont do anything now, the nation will never recover from the shock that this event is going to generate
