Petition to Protect the Safety of Baywood

St. Matthew's Catholic Church submitted a proposal to the City of San Mateo to build a new, 6 million dollar, 12,915 square foot "Community Parish Center" at their current location without building any additional on-site parking. According to the San Mateo Zoning Codes:

-- Parking capacity at St. Matthews is currently under the legal requirement by 154 spaces. Today, this under-capacity causes unsafe driving and congestion in the neighborhoods around the site; and

-- This proposed project will intensify the parking crisis by extending the parking deficit to 341 total spaces, even after St. Matthews reconfigures their current parking, and even if the 40 space Affinity Bank parking lot across El Camino Real could be permanently rented (as is currently being discussed).

Despite their large investment in the project, the increasing levels of discontent and safety hazards in the surrounding neighborhoods, and the current zoning laws, St. Matthews remains unwilling to be reasonable and to act as a good member of the neighborhood by including sufficient additional on-site parking as part of this project. Instead, St. Matthews is content to allow hundreds of daily visitors to park on the surrounding streets, amplifying the existing safety hazards, illegal parking, and severe congestion, endangering the hundreds of children in the area and at school, and reducing property values in the adjacent neighborhoods.

We, the citizens of San Mateo, respectfully petition the San Mateo Planning Commission and City Council to protect the safety of the neighborhoods around St. Matthews by requiring that St. Matthews solve the neighborhood parking and traffic crisis, rather than amplify it, if granted permission to overbuild on the current site. We ask that the City require St. Matthews to abide by the laws of common sense and act reasonably, and comply with the San Mateo Zoning Laws, the Hexagon Parking Study, and the wishes of their neighbors, and maintain a minimum of 699 permanent on-site parking spaces as a requirement of the proposed Community Parish Center at the current location.
