Protect Staff Pay sign now

Tomorrow at noon the School of Historical Studies will put forward two proposals that, if passed, will seriously damage the reputation of this school, its staff members and its students.
In brief, these two proposals are
1. to cease paying tutors to attend lectures (and instead provide them with one extra hour of payment)
2. to cease paying honorary staff members to supervise postgraduate students, forcing them to work pro bono.

These two measures will materially damage the quality of teaching offered by the School, reduce career opportunities for postgraduate tutors, and undermine the value of work contributed by non-permanent members of staff. These two motions devalue the work performed by tutors and honorary staff members. It seems likely that they will also affect the quality of research being carried out by non-permanent staff. We think it equitable that all staff members be paid for the work they complete. To ask any staff member to undertake work on an unpaid or pro bono basis is unethical. In plain terms, these changes may reduce the ability of the School to provide adequate supervision to postgraduate and honours students, and retain the outstanding quality of teaching upon which this School has made its reputation over the last decade or so. These proposals damage the fundamental academic principles of research and transfer of knowledge.

We call on all staff members, and in particular the School Executive, to abandon these proposals immediately. We assert that cutting the quality of teaching will not result in a more financially healthy school in the medium to long term, but will result in damaging the academic reputation of this institution.

I am currently tutoring at a university in the UK where tutors are not required to attend lectures the first time they teach a class - this shows in the quality of the teaching. History at Melbourne has a strong reputation because of the high standards it

In an era when the Federal Goverment is about to make the largest investment into Higher Education in over a Decade it would be short sighted to punish the next generation of academics and the most experienced generation at the same time!
