Protect Hulme's Green Spaces sign now

Hulme: yet more concrete jungle?

The big patch of waste ground between Stretford Road and Asda (Birley Fields) is about to be obliterated, along with the other remaining open spaces on either side of Hulme Arch.

Manchester City Council wants to turn all this land into a mixture of offices, housing and other commercial buildings, with just one potential open space to cover a tiny fraction of the land.

Hulme residents have NOT been consulted on these plans.

We say:
Most of the existing Birley Fields offices remain empty after several years
- is it really a good idea to build yet more?

Many Hulme residents feel the developers who built their houses, and the city planners who let them get away with it, did a terrible job - what safeguards are in place for these new sites?

Will the people on lower incomes who have traditionally formed the backbone of the Hulme community, be able to afford the new houses, shops and office spaces?

What about fostering a greater sense of community in Hulme, without giving over our land to big companies and profit-hungry developers?

What about trees, flowers and green space? How about doing something imaginative with the land, like developing allotments or a City Farm that could help put Hulme on the map?

We do NOT have confidence in Manchester City Council to redevelop this land in a way that meets Hulmes needs, and call for a genuine public consultation before it progresses its plans.

Good luck to those in the community who are prepared to put themselves out for the benefit of everyone else - my only concern is 'getting into bed' with the politicians - mt view is, that it will be held over until after the election and the council will

More than half the offices and flats built in Manchester over the past 5 years are empty. Building more is NOT a solution. When the property bubble bursts, Manchester will suffer.

I have already tried to start a business in hulme, only to be outpriced by NPP who bought up all the retail units on Hulme High Street - affordable business/retail units for the community
