Protect Grosse Ile Access2 sign now

I. Summary Of The Problem

The Wayne County Bridge (AKA the Free Bridge) currently handles three-quarters of the vehicle traffic to and from Grosse Ile. A large portion of this traffic is comprised of work commuters and shoppers residing on Grosse Ile who travel from the bridge over Van Horn Road to destinations in Downriver, Detroit and other communities in the Detroit Metropolitan area. Van Horn Road is also a critically important route for ambulances on emergency runs from the island to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton.

In order to accommodate DaimlerChrysler's current proposal to expand the Trenton Engine Plant, the Trenton City Council recently voted to close the section of Van Horn Road that enables vehicle traffic and ambulances from Grosse Ile to most directly travel from the Wayne County Bridge to Fort Street, Allen Road, I-75 and other major roads in the area.

II. Petition In Opposition Of Reducing Passenger Vehicle And Ambulance Access To And From Grosse Ile, Michigan By Closing Van Horn Road In Trenton, Michigan.

We, the undersigned citizens, are signing this petition to inform the Federal Government, State of Michigan, Wayne County, City of Trenton and Grosse Ile Township that we are strongly opposed to the recently announced proposal to close Van Horn Road without implementing measures to, at the very least, maintain the current level of passenger vehicle and ambulance access to and from Grosse Ile.

We do not oppose the concept of expanding of the DaimlerChrysler Trenton Engine Plant. We merely want the expansion proposal not to negatively affect the residents and businesses of Grosse Ile and Trenton.

We urge all government officials to oppose any proposal that does the following:

(1) Increases the time it takes for ambulances traveling from Grosse Ile to reach Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton.

(2) Increases the time it takes for vehicle traffic from Grosse Ile to reach Fort Street, Allen Road, I-75 and other major roads in the area.

(3) Routes traffic through residential neighborhoods in Grosse Ile and Trenton.

(4) Negatively affects residential property values in Grosse Ile and Trenton.

(5) Involves the government's use of eminent domain lawsuits to acquire privately-owned homes and businesses in Grosse Ile and Trenton.

(6) Reduces the capacity of the Wayne County Bridge (AKA the Free Bridge) to provide residents and businesses from Grosse Ile and other Downriver communities with a means of traveling to and from the island without paying a toll.
