i. VERSIУN EN CASTELLANO

sinceramente,

Los abajo firmantes

ii. ENGLISH VERSION
We, the undersigned petitioners, as faithful admirers of the Spaniard localization of the game for the Xbox console "Halo: Combat Evolved" (for us, hence, "Halo: el combate ha evolucionado"), do hereby manifest our absolute rejection and profound disappointment by the decisions taken by Microsoft and Bungie relating to the release of Halo 2 in Spain.

- We denounce that the quality of the acting of the Spanish dub is awful, where voices do not fit, actors limit themselves to read along their part and any attempt to dive into the plot of the game becomes an impossible feature.

- We denounce that the quality of the translation is bad because of deliberate indolence, by not bothering to take into account that Halo 2 is the sequel of another videogame ("Halo: el combate ha evolucionado") and by wiping out the way lots of terms, characteristic of the fantastic universe of Halo, were already translated in that first instalment, and hence ruining the continuity of the story. Because of the very same reason, we also denounce the decision to choose new voices for the characters that repeat their presence, when the acting of the actorsof "Halo: el combate ha evolucionado" turned out more than satisfactory.

-We denounce, over all other things, the huge lack of knowledge of the Spanish language demonstrated by those responsible for the decision to release Halo 2 in Spain with a latin-american dub. What bonds all of us, speaking Spanish, are some rules on syntax and phonetics and the lexicon available in Spain until centuries XVI-XVII. From then on, the linguistic points in common end. Each Spanish-speaking country has its own culture, traditions and history and, according to those, it has been developed a lexicon of itself as well as expressions, idioms and slang that mean nothing or even the complete opposite if they are used in another country. It should be enough to mention that not even verbs preserve the same meaning in some Spanish speaking countries or that identical characters might imply different phonemes in each circumstance.

When joining together those first three issues we have as a result an unplayable game where the awful acting in the dub makes it possible to place yourself into the game, where the huge mistake of cultural localization prevents us from understanding lots of sentences or even makes us laugh or taunt. It is virtually impossible to get into the game and it gets distorted to exaggerating levels.

Besides, we want to denounce what is in our opinion a shameful attitude of Microsoft Ibйrica towards these series of mistakes and the derived actions taken towards the community of XBox players in Spain because of this problem.

- We denounce, thus, the deliberate will of deceiving the end user, by adding a sticker on every copy of Halo 2 in Spain reading "Totalmente en castellano", i.e. "Totally in castilian", which is misleading. The term "Castellano", "Castilian" in English, is usually used, and this is what every Spaniard buyer will understand, as a way to refer to the distinctive flavor of Espaсol, that is Spanish, spoken in Spain, understanding that "Espaсol", "Spanish" in English, is generally used in Spain in a more broader way when one refers to all variants spoken all over the world. As a matter of fact, no other country refers to one of its languages as Castilian but Spain.

- We denounce the deliberate will of deceiving the end user, by airing on TV, in Spain, the commercial of Halo 2 with perfectly dubbed and localized voices, when the dub to be found in the game is very different.

Considering all the care and professionalism put into the making of Halo 1, when taking into consideration Spaniard users, with a budget, we presume, quite lower than that of Halo 2, we do not understand why Bungie and Microsoft have decided to spoil the Halo 2 experience to that same audience.

Because of all those reasons, we make a petition for the game to be localized for Spain in a decent manner and to have it changed or updated for free to all those who acquired the game at a given moment, without leaving aside the substantial amount of players that have opted to import the original PAL/UK version.

We do not ask for a Spaniard localization to be established as standard of dubbing for the whole Spanish speaking community, all the contrary. Each country should have its own localization, except for those which, by historical or cultural reasons, would see fit a common localization.

We honestly consider that the community of Xbox players of Spain deserves that in this case, without grievance to the rest of Spanish speaking communities, of course. We hope that you mend the injury caused in a satisfactory way for all and in the shortest time span that is possible.
