PROJECT BERMUDAFICATION:

Please grant two property owners Coastal Development Permits to replace existing failed seawalls. The purpose of the project is stabilization of the eroding coastal bluff as well as providing protection to their primary residences from future bluff failures. In addition, a serious public safety hazard will be abated and one of the last easy access barefoot beaches in the San Diego area will be preserved for safe use by future generations. This pocket beach is located at the foot of Bermuda Ave, San Diego, Ca. 92107 and the Pacific Ocean south towards Point Loma Ave.

HISTORY

Two Property owners have been attempting to obtain Coastal Development Permits for the last eight years to rebuild seawalls that failed during a New Years 1999 storm cycle. These seawall and bluff failures are located at Bermuda Cove Beach, at the foot of Bermuda Ave. and pose a serious hazard to beachgoers.

Subsequent storms during the last eleven years and the 2010 El Nino event have resulted in erosion of the westerly bluffs so severe that two residences are threatened with destabilization. Two additional residences are in imminent danger. In March of 2010 an emergency permit was granted by the City of San Diego for temporary measures to abate this hazard fronting 1421 Ocean Front; however it is of the utmost importance that these property owners are successful in acquiring a coastal development permit that will provide a block long solution to this public hazard.

In addition to this hazard, on December 31, 2009 the staircase providing the only beach access to this pocket beach was closed by the City of San Diego street department because of dangerous conditions and undermining of the soil beneath the staircase. Conditions worsen with each passing day and storm.

The proposed replacement wall will be structurally sound and every effort will be made to blend into the environment approximating a natural bluff. The cost to the community is zero; the benefit to the community is priceless. A safe beautiful environment will again be available to our beach community.
