Professional Competencies Exam sign now

We the Class of 2014 feel that a meeting must be called to discuss the Professional Competencies portion of the impending Metabolism & Homeostasis examination. We appreciate that our feedback is taken seriously, but also that ultimately it constitutes only suggestions with respect to curricular direction. However, we feel that our feedback is not being heard at present.

Following our discussion of the Host Defence exam, we largely communicated that we felt examinations were not an accurate reflections of our readings, discussions, and group interactions. Moreover, we feel that our tutorials and selective papers, both of which require considerable investment of our time, constitute a superior diagnostic of our performance in the unit.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, we feel that eight days is an inadequate forewarning of the exam format and content. The Professional Competencies unit is robust and comprehensive, and would require more preparation time even if the core science aspect of the exam were not looming large contemporaneously with the Pro Comp aspect.

To be clear, we resolutely believe that the Professional Competencies Unit is important and a vital part of our medical education. However, its current implementation is at times discouraging and can affect our ability to look forward to aspects of the curriculum.

At present, we have very real concerns that between tutorial preparation that frequently exceeds the amount of time we are able to invest in the core curriculum, selective projects that we have little experience with and require a great deal of attention, and exam prep, that we have no choice but to neglect our core material.

We are not asking for a systemic upheaval, as once again we value Professional Competencies. However, we do feel that a compromise needs to be made and that perhaps it should be manifested in a reconsideration of the Pro Comp portion of the exam. We feel this is crucial to our ability to appreciate Professional Competencies, and indirectly to appreciate core medicine. Undoubtedly, these kinds of discussions will aid the formation of our curriculum for the years to come as well.
