Proclamation for Responsible Immigration Reform
Declared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania February 14, 2006

Whereas the first Americans declared that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" and

Whereas we, like the founders of this great nation and the countless generations of immigrants since, are drawn to the light of freedom and the opportunity to build a better life for our children and

Whereas present immigration laws would not have permitted entrance to the parents and grandparents of millions of successful American citizens and

Whereas these laws keep families separated, lead to deadly border crossings, and leave those of us without documents in the shadows of America andWhereas we are not sojourners but active participants in the economy and we share in the building the American Dream and

Whereas our contributions are numerous and significant and far outweigh any emergency support and

Whereas the current labor needs of the United States tacitly encourage our presence while denying the many legal status and civil rights and

Whereas the great leaders and participants in the civil rights movement showed by their example that peaceful protest can change the status quo.


Therefore, we assert our right to be more than bystanders and beseech those with the privilege to participate in the political system to act on our behalf, themselves, and for the benefit of the nation as a whole, by advocating for the following:

A Means for the undocumented to live a Peaceful Life by earning legal status and citizenship;

A legal way for new workers to Pursue Happiness without risking their lives in the desert or sea and be protected by labor laws once they are here;

A Removal of delays that keep family members apart for years;

And a Targeted and effective enforcement that respects our Humanness and our Liberty of Expression.
