Prevent Move Aways By Custodial Parent sign now

The need to prevent a custodial parent from moving more than a distance of a 200 mile radius from the non-custodial parent unless there is a very valid reason. Even if there is a valid reason, the custodial parent should be responsible for expenses of the travel. In many cases, the non-custodial parent should be able to prove staying in the environment the child is used to is better than adding to the trauma of a divorce by moving the child a far distant from the other parent.

Many states do not have a law or code that would prevent a custodial parent from moving a child/children an unreasonable amount of miles from the non-custodial parent. The custodial parent views this opportunity as a way to "get back" at the non-custodial parent. There is little the non-custodial parent can do. An example of what can happen to a child is when the custodial parent is angry and bitter toward the non-custodial parent as a way of "getting back" they will look for a job that is many miles away. In the case of my son, the child was moved approximately 15 hours away. In order for my son to visit approximately once a month, he has to purchase a plane ticket, rent a car and a hotel room, drive from Minneapolis to Rochester and pick his son up. He arrives in Rochester on Friday afternoon and then drops his son off after going to church and eating lunch together. He then drives back to Minneapolis to board his plane back to Memphis. All of this costs approximately $500. As my son has said many times it is not the money, he is thankful God has blessed him in a way that he can do this for now. The fact is, this money could have been spent directly on the child or put away for his education. Plus, there is no dollar amount that can be put on time spent with his son.

There are many non-custodial parents who are dealing with the same and some even worse conditions to try and spend precious time with their child/children.

It is time the judges and lawmakers realize their needs to be a change. The children need to have protection from their own parent who would take them away from a parent. There needs to be protection when a parent can prove the other parent is trying to turn the child against them.

Where do the changes take place, the legislature is responsible for changing the laws, the judges are responsible for enforcing them. We need to push both the legislature and the judges to realize the non-custodial parent (usually the father) loves the child and the child deserves to have a meaningful relationship with both parents.
