President George W. Bush: Hurricane Katrina Federal Response and Accountability sign now

September 3, 2005

Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States of America
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

Recent events involving Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana has shaken any remnant of confidence we have in your administration to capably lead our country. Four years after the 9/11 attacks, our nation is clearly not prepared to address serious events of national significance.

The federal governments response to our fellow Americans in New Orleans borders on the criminal. The images and accounts from New Orleans are disturbing and are reminiscent of catastrophic disasters involving ancient Pompeii and the Russian Kursk submarine disaster.

Mr. President, as Americans of all races, creeds, ethnic backgrounds, and political affiliations, we deeply value the emotional and spiritual significance embodied in the preamble of our constitution: "We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity...

Mr. President, as our nations chief constitutional officer, our country has honored you twice with the opportunity to protect and defend the principles embodied in this sacred document.

Mr. President, your leadership is required to redeem the principles of justice, domestic tranquility, general welfare, and blessings. Without the principles we all hold so sacred, there is no perfect union. These principles must be redeemed before the face of the world.

Your administration has failed us terribly in this critical hour of need. We the people of the United States demand the following remedies:

Immediate resignation of Undersecretary Michael D. Brown, FEMA
Convene an emergency session of Congress to rescind and reconsider the recently signed $286 Billion Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) or federal highway transportation bill. This spending bill must be revisited in order to ensure that the general welfare of hurricane victims in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama are properly attended too.

Mr. President, registered and active voters of both parties are watching. We look forward to working with you to rebuild the ruins, to raise up foundations, to repair the breach, and to restore the paths in which our fellow Americans can safely dwell.
