Preserve The Site Of Butlins Mosney Holiday Camp sign now

Butlins Holiday Camp in Mosney, East Ireland was opened in 1948 and at its peak could accomodate 2800 holidaymakers and an additional 4000 day visitors on any given day.

Sir Billy Butlin was the pioneer of family holidays in the UK and not only a businessman of great merit, but also a great philanthropist with a genuine desire to make people happy.

This was reflected in the iconic Butlins slogan "Our True Intent Is All For Your Delight", and hundreds of thousands of families can attest to the fact that this intent was clearly demonstrated to them in their visits to Butlins holiday camps, hotels and amusement parks throughout Great Britain, and to a lesser extent overseas.

Butlins Mosney sadly closed many years ago but the site still survives today remarkably well preserved as the last remaining example of how Butlins camps were originally built.

Three Butlins sites are of course still open today and the company is thriving, but like all other companies they have moved with the times to remain commercially viable. Todays Butlins resorts, whilst still offering fantastic family holidays and carrying on some of the traditions introduced by its founder, mostly bear little resemblance to the early days.

The Mosney camp is currently a holding centre for asylum seekers undergoing the refugee application process, and it continues to be maintained much as it was in Butlins days, complete with the original chalets, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and other facilities. From publicly available images it would appear that all the buildings have been maintained in excellent condition, much to the credit of the current owner.

It is our understanding that the government originally only had a contract to operate the detention centre until 2005. Also, it has been expressed that the facilities in the old camp are not ideal for their current purpose in the longer term.

We believe therefore that if the detention centre is ever closed, it is very likely that the Butlins buildings would be demolished or substantially altered, and thus this last remaining fully intact traditional Butlins holiday camp would be gone forever.

We respectfully ask you to do all you can to support us in our efforts to ensure that whatever the future use of the site at Mosney, the original Butlins buildings be preserved in so far as possible, and maintained to a high standard.

We ideally seek to achieve a long term future use of the site that allows the general public some form of access (perhaps as a 'retro' themed holiday camp or working museum of some sort), and that respects the heritage of the site as the last remaining major British holiday camp that is largely unchanged.
