Police Repression in Mexico sign now

Mrs. Sandra Fuentes-Berain
Ambassador of Mexico
Nassauplein 28
2585 EC The Hague
The Netherlands

Dear Mrs. Ambassador Sandra Fuentes-Berain,

We, the organizations and individuals who have signed below, want to express our deep concern about the violation of rights and the repressive wave that arose in Mexico preceding the elections of 2 July.

We denounce the police actions on 14 June in Oaxaca de Juбrez, where several police units violently put down the demonstration of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE). The use of large caliber weapons, smoke bombs, tear gas, truncheons, and pepper spray, resulted in hundreds of people being poisoned by noxious gases, more than 190 wounded and several press agencies reported that 4 to 11 people were killed.

We also denounce the police actions taken in San Salvador de Atenco, on 3 and 4 of May, which also represented the systematic violation of basic human rights. Abusive and arbitrary force resulted in 50 people being wounded, the death of a 14 year-old child, the imprisonment of more than 200 people, sexual aggression towards the imprisoned women and inadequate medical treatment of the prisoners.

We are also worried by the insistent criminalisation of the demonstrators, as well as the intimidation of the media and journalists who have published opposing versions to the official one, and finally the repression of human rights organizations.

For that reason we demand of the Mexican State and Federal Government:

 An explanation for their actions and punishment of the guilty parties
 To end the violence against, and criminalisation of, the civil society and its organizations
 To meet the demands of the social movements
 To release the political prisoners

We also demand of the State Commission of Human Rights of Oaxaca and of the National Commission of the Human Rights that they investigate and document the violations committed.

Finally, we want to make public that we will be informing Dutch society about the precarious situation of Mexican citizens. We will demand of the Dutch government to take the events into consideration in their diplomatic and economic relations with Mexico. We will also promote sanctions in those international institutions in which our government participates, until the new Mexican government, which won the elections on 2 of July, guarantees their commitment to the human rights of its citizens.

In solidarity with the people of Mexico, the victims and the social movements which strive for justice,
