Petition to Update the General Education Curriculum to Include a Diversity Requirement sign now

Background:
The fight for a Diversity Requirement in particular has lasted over 20 years. Students desire some assurance that their classmates are being educated critically in regards to race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, disability and so on. WASC accreditation and others look at diversity as an important factor in evaluating higher education. Students from other countries come to here because of what it can offer along the lines of diversity. Being the only UC lacking required courses on diversity puts its students at a disadvantage. The university is obligated in its duties as a bastion of higher learning to prepare student and equip them with the tools necessary to succeed. In a growing trans-national world we are being asked to engage more and more frequently with the complex issue of diversity in the work place and in graduate and post-graduate education and theory. You cannot have a career in politics, law, science, medicine, education or even art without tackling the issues of identity and perception. We still live in a disadvantaged and imperfect world. We owe it to ourselves and to others to end ignorance, hatred and phobias. This GE Requirement change would not only be a step towards ending those seeming impossible odds but would also be a symbol of this universitys commitment to its students and the larger LA community, a commitment to diversity.
We are asking for a merger of the Foundations of Society and Culture General Education Requirement and the Diversity Requirement. We need to implement a system for ensuring everyone has to at some point in their educational career confront and address this topic. This does not require the creation of additional courses, nor does it require additional course requirements. It simply requires that one of the three courses required to satisfy the GE Foundations of Society and Culture satisfies the following proposed diversity requirement.

The Diversity Requirement:
The diversity requirement helps to ground students in the realities of a multicultural, transnational, global society, and provides tools for studying the complexity of diverse communities defined by characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, age, and disability and are relevant to the understanding of these dynamics in contemporary society and culture in the U.S. and around the world. As part of but not in addition to the existing General Education requirement, students must take one course in the GE Foundations of Society and Culture that focuses in a central and substantial way on issues, theories, and methods relevant to analyzing and understanding inter-group dynamics and diversity in its broadest sense.

Proposal:
Change the name of the Foundations of Society and Culture GE Requirement to Foundation of Society, Culture and Diversity

Amend GE description to include definition and importance of diversity (look to Arts and Architecture Diversity Requirement as an example)

Amend course requirements to require students to take 1 course in diversity for the third five-unit course
