Subject: Petition to nominate Prof. Debapriyo Syam as the interim Head of the Department of Physics at Presidency University.
Dear Sir,
We, the undersigned, are graduates of the Physics department at Presidency University (formerly Presidency College). We have recently become aware that a search for the interim Head of the Department for the Department of Physics, Presidency University is underway. We would like to nominate Prof. Debapriyo Syam (currently teaching at Barasat Govt. College) for the above mentioned position. Each of us has turned to Prof. Syam (or DS as he is affectionately known among his students) as a mentor during one stage or another of our academic life, and it is with great pleasure that we recall his depth of knowledge in the subject, enthusiasm to teach, and the care and patience he showed his students. His devotion towards educating generations of students is unquestionable, and his unique teaching style has made him readily accessible to students of all academic backgrounds. Prof. Syam is an inspiring teacher and possesses the rare capability of instilling his enthusiasm amongst his pupils with exceptional ease. His creative and lucid teaching style are testimony to his expertise in the field, and one of the reasons for his popularity amongst the students.
While active teaching duties at both undergraduate (Bachelors) and graduate (Masters) have occupied a large fraction of Prof. Syam's time, he is still actively involved with cutting-edge research in nuclear physics, which is his specialty. His recent publication list is attached with this letter. Besides working on nuclear physics, Prof. Syam also devotes significant time and energy in working on smaller theoretical and experimental projects with his students, and quite a few of these projects have led to publishable results.
Prof. Syam is also regarded very highly amongst his peers as evidenced by his recent appointment as the Head of the Department in Barasat Govt. College. Prior to his move to Barasat Govt. College, Prof. Syam had spent a number of years in Presidency College where he was in charge of the nuclear physics laboratory. He was also an instructor for the B.Sc. and M.Sc. experimental courses, and many of us fondly remember the care with which he planned, conducted and taught experiments which elucidated principles of physics.
We strongly believe that Prof. Syam shows all the necessary qualities to perform the duties of the Head of the Department of Physics in Presidency University. A hard working person like him would be an ideal interim Head for the Department. We are confident that everybody in Presidency University will appreciate him not only for his hard work, but also for his interest in physics as well as his honesty and integrity. Given his devotion towards physics, and students of physics, he will take the right steps to ensure that the students at the university get the best training not only in Physics, but also on scientific and rational thinking to help them take their next step in the broader sphere of life.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
