Petition for Rose Hume sign now

Ever have a professor that meant a lot to you? Taught you somereal--world knowledge for a change? We have, and her name is Rose Hume.

We came to Ohio State thinking a great education was coming our way--aneducation that would make us ace reporters. After all, reporting is notjust about good writing, but about interviewing, knowing when a goodnews story smacks you in the face and most of all, having the passionto give the public information about their world. We thought that if we worked hard in our classes, completed ourassignments, studied and learned, the university would complete its endof the bargain--teaching us the basic skills we need to prepare us fora job. But it was foolish of us to trust our department. In case you don't know, the journalism program here at grand ol' OSUhas been hijacked and is slowing being sucked into public relationsworld, or the "dark side," as hard-core journalists call it.Public relations is the study of spinning the truth into fiction. Sure,it's a legit area of study, and someday we'll probably sell out and goPR for the cash. However, right now as journalism students, we'd ratherlearn how to uncover government secrets, not hide them under a thinlayer of garbage.

Here's where Rose Hume comes in. She's the last remaining ray of lightin the underfunded journalism school, and the only person who's tryingto teach students how to write, edit, and form a good story.Rose has spent countless hours struggling to publish thehighly-decorated Lantern. On top of that she teaches most of thejournalism core classes and, eureka!, doesn't spend class time talkingabout kids, the media or other communications studies that have nothingto do with writing.

You'd think the woman would get a medal, pay raise or praises by thehigher-ups for doing the work of five and keeping their budgetpainfully low. But no, she won't get either. She won't get eitherbecause the school has decided to let her go.After doing away with classes and slashing prominent programs, including the Kiplinger Graduate program, the School of Communications(formerly known as the School of Journalism) and its director, CarolGlynn, has decided to get rid of Rose. And what's Glynn's excuse? Hume's "mission" does not reallycoincide with the school's "mission" of communication. What a lousy excuse. (Future PR students, please take notes from this. This is a great lesson in twisting the truth.)Rose Hume's "mission" coincided just fine with the students, who, by the way, are the ones paying to go to school. If Rose's goalwas to teach her students, what exactly is the school's new mission--toprovide a valueless education? So here's a piece of advice: If you're a student who wants to become agood journalist with fantastic investigative skills and a nose forstories, do not come here. It's not worth it to waste four years ofyour life. And to Rose, we'll miss you and good luck because the students who getyou next are lucky.

Rose Hume represents the way students and professors SHOULD interact, for growth and learning. I have not had a teacher in the communications department who interacted and helped with my education as much as Rose Hume. If Hume does not represent the missi

Dropping Rose would be the worst thing imaginable for this paper; there is not a more qualified and better fit for the Lantern and the staffers than she.

Rose is the person who ignites my enthusiasm in journalism. She has been the compassionate, and at times stern shepherd to all of us. Without her, there is no journalism for me.

She should not be let go. What an injustice to students.

Not renewing Rose's contract would be a big mistake for the journalism department and the whole univesity.

The communications side of the school of journalism and communications has just earned every disrespectful comment I have ever made towards it. Namely, that communications people perform without morals, without decency and without souls. Glynn and anyone

Once again the University makes a poor decision. Rose was easily one of the best instructors Ive had at OSU. I learned more about journalism and improved my writing more in the two quarters I worked with Rose then the previous 2 years combined. Shes a tru

I do not understand why Rose was let go. I cannot even imagine my next two quarters without her as a professor. Bring her back.

The petition says it all. In an atmosphere that is already ever-changing with new editors and reporters every quarter, Rose is the stability -- the rock -- that keeps The Lantern solid and professional. Rumors indicate that a new adviser will be appointed

Rose is one of the most influential people in my journalism career. She has touched so many people and has so much to teach journalism students in the future. It would be robbery to deny future journalists to not be influenced by her.

I have always wanted to be a journalist. After four years at OSU, I feel cheated. The journalism school taught me nothing. The ONLY experience or knowledge I gained was writing for the Lantern while honing my interviewing skills. Ask any journalist, to re

I was saddened when I found out about this because my time with Rose was relatively brief, and I was really looking forward to learning more from someone who has been an outstanding mentor to everyone. Please weigh all of your options one more time.
