Petition Against Reserved Student Group Seats at Sporting Events sign now

We the undersigned oppose the creating of reserved seats at any sporting event for an organized group that has exclusive rules which discriminate against all students joining said organization. Currently, the 'Hoo Crew is seeking reserved seats in John Paul Jones Arena for the 2006 2007 school year. The 'Hoo Crew requires that all members pay a $20 membership fee in addition to a strict attendance policy and wearing official 'Hoo Crew attire.

In giving reserved seats to one group allows that group to monopolize what they do with those seats. If the 'Hoo Crew is successful in gaining reserved sections they will displace other students who cannot financially, time-wise or belief-wise afford to join the 'Hoo Crew. The effect of allowing the 'Hoo Crew reserved sections with the best possible seats discourages other die-hard fans that cannot otherwise join 'Hoo Crew from attending Men's Home Basketball games.

In addition giving the 'Hoo Crew reserved seats would also create a rift between students. The 'Hoo Crew organizes cheers and actions that only their members are privy to. This excludes general students who are not let in on the cheers in any reliable manner. This would in effect have one side of the student section doing one thing, and the other side doing something else. This sort of segregated fan base would be ruinous to the traditional comradeship between students.

The 'Hoo Crew is an exclusive organization aimed at securing good seats at Men's Home Basketball games, season tickets to these games, and loyalty points with the Virginia Athletics Foundation. This is controversial with the 'Hoo Crew's stated purpose; The purpose of the Hoo Crew is to push the University of Virginias fanbase to be the best in the nation. We will provide the ultimate homecourt/homefield advantage in the nation. We will create a rabid, hostile environment that makes other teams fear playing the Hoos, all in order to make UVA the best athletics program in the ACC and the NCAA. Preferential seating at basketball games does not help the fan base of the University as a whole. In securing the seats the 'Hoo Crew is greedily gobbling up seats that every student should be entitled to. The 'Hoo Crew is only creating an environment for themselves to be rabid fans, while discouraging everyone else from doing the same.

The United States of America and the University of Virginia both have the current goal of treating everyone as an equal. In giving one group of students ('Hoo Crew) preferential seating over another (general student body) ruins this tradition of equality. Furthermore, the 'Hoo Crew requires money, time, and color (orange shirts) something that not every student can afford. Giving the 'Hoo Crew reserved seating gives them an advantage over these students, who must go through the SHOTS system and wait in line hours before a game starts just to get a decent seat. 'Hoo Crew members would only have to arrive 15 minutes prior to a game starting and would be reserved a spot to sit. This destroys the basic human right of equality with ones peers.

All students of the University are required to pay an athletics fee that allows attendance at sporting events such as football and basketball. In enacting priority reserved seating for the 'Hoo Crew the best seats in the newly constructed John Paul Jones Arena (JPJ) will be given exclusively to one student group. We contend that since we pay the athletics fee that every student is required to pay that we should be able to sit wherever we want to within the student section. We believe no organization should be given an unfair advantage over any student that pays a fee.

We believe the most fair thing to do is make every student wait in line before each Men's Home Basketball game. The seating at the Men's Basketball games would then be General Admission with the students arriving first being allowed to sit in the seats that they prefer. If a student group (such as 'Hoo Crew) wants to organize themselves to arrive hours early to a game to obtain the best seats then they may do so. This puts every student on an even level with his or her peers while still allowing groups such as the 'Hoo Crew to achieve their purpose.

Finally, this petition is not meant to be ruinous to the 'Hoo Crew. The 'Hoo Crew is an essential addition to the University of Virginia's fan base. We simply believe that the 'Hoo Crew should not eclipse other fans in 'Hoo Crew attempts at achieving their goals. We believe that the 'Hoo Crew already has enough incentives for its membership, and only wish their time was better spent on their noble mission.

School and Year CLAS IV The Hoo Crew is a good idea in theory, but has failed in practice. Organizing students to provide a more hostile environment it great. Organizing a select group of students, however, alienates the general population, and ultimatel

School and Year CLAS 2007 Hopefully in the near future, we will come to agree that UVa students are intelligent enough to make noise and chant without being subjected to an ugly-orange-t-shirt code and membership fees for prime seating.

School and Year 4th year SEAS Hoo Crew should focus on PR. They should not be given the priviledge of good seating. They are not entitled to that which should be earned on a game-by-game basis.
