This is an open letter asking Oxford University management to justify the decisions it made during the occupation of the Radcliffe Camera. We hope that it will start a healthy dialogue between the university members and management on this matter. If you agree with what is written in the letter please sign below.

Dear Vice Chancellor, Proctors and other responsible members of the university management,

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our dismay at your decision to close the Radcliffe Camera and Old Bodleian libraries during the recent occupation. We feel that this decision turned the occupation from what could have been an inclusive, positive forum for discussion (as has been the case in other universities) into something which provoked tensions and divisions within the university community.

Closing the Old Bodleian Library seemed particularly unnecessary given that it was not being occupied, nor was there any indication that this would happen. Therefore, we ask you to publicly justify your decisions including the closure of both libraries and the use of police force.

We believe a university is a place for learning, discussion and development of ideas. By closing the libraries, you stopped those who supported or were interested in the cause from learning more about it. Furthermore, you stopped students who had no interest in the campaign from accessing the library and the books within it.

The physical division of people in and outside of the Radcliffe Camera allowed rumours to spread causing misunderstanding and hostility amongst university members.

We appreciate and thank you for the comments made privately about your support for the right to protest as well as your shared concerns about the education cuts. We ask you to make these public and we hope that in future you deal with similar situations in a constructive rather than obstructive way. We also hope that the Vice Chancellor can enter into a direct and constructive dialogue with university members about these issues.

We are convinced that you understand both the gravity of the protestors cause and the need for a free, progressive exchange of ideas associated with it. We look forward to seeing you engage with this exchange through a direct public statement.
