Opposition to Maryland HOUSE BILL 583 sign now

HB 583 http://mlis.state.md.us/2010rs/bills/hb/hb0583f.pdf
is clearly in opposition the spirit behind the concept of house of correction - a place of short-term confinement for persons convicted of minor offenses and regarded as capable of being reformed-. It is pretty difficult too see how this bill will contribute in rehabilitating the prisoners and getting them ready for reinsertion in the community. The detention center should work with community organizations to provide prisoners with jobs, schooling and substance abuse help instead of adding unto them a financial burden that can only make their reinsertion in the community a difficult one.

A few weeks earlier Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Richard Moses ruled against a similar fees imposed to inmates by Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson. http://www.heraldnews.com/news/x1767502891/High-court-rejects-Sheriff-Hodgsons-5-day-inmate-fee

We urge Maryland lawmakers to reject this bill and focus on job creation, housing relief for the countless people in need and healthcare.
