Opposition To Bill 5741:Universal National Service Act sign now

Dear Senate majority leader Harry Reid ,

There is currently legislation pending in Congress (H.R 5741) that would require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security

We as Americans feel that this is an unnecessary and unjustified violation of our constitutional rights, and are hereby petitioning it's passage.

The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, also known as the Burk-Wadsworth Act, 54 Stat. 885 passed by the Congress of the United States on September 14, 1940,already required that men between the ages of 21 and 35 register with local draft boards, and later, when the U.S. entered World War II, all men aged 18 to 45 were made liable for military service, and all men aged 18 to 36 were and now are required to register.

Nothing contained in this Act was ever constructed to require any person to be subject to combatant training and service in the land and naval forces of the United States who, by reason of religious training and belief, was conscientiously opposed to participation in war in any form.

Any such person who claimed such exemption from combatant training and service because of such conscientious objections whose claim was sustained by the local draft board was, if he or she was inducted into the land or naval forces under this Act, to be assigned to noncombatant service as defined by the President, or was if he or she was found to be conscientiously opposed to participation in such noncombatant service, in lieu of such induction, was to be assigned to work of national importance under civilian direction.

This bill should be defeated - period.

At the very least, this bill should be amended to include a distinction of the sort of compensation that would be provided under such circumstances, since there are no provisions for any benefits for secondary school or college,as well as what sort of options would be available if a citizen were not eligible and/or conscientiously opposed to participation in such noncombatant service

As it has been rumored, we are very concerned about this legislation being brought to the floor without the benefit of a hearing and mark-up in either chamber of Congress. We are especially worried that the bill would be heard on the suspension calendar without the possibility of floor amendments being offered. The far-reaching effects of this bill and its lack of consensus warrant full consideration of its issues in the 110th Congress.

We respectfully request that you oppose consideration of H.R. 5741 in the House in these closing days of the 109th Congress. Thank you for your consideration of this most important matter. Thank you for your proven leadership and attention to important issues such as this one.
