Open Letter to President George W. Bush sign now

President, United States of America

Javier Solana
High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy
Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union

Your Excellencies,

Dissident Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji has been in prison for more than five years. In protest to his imprisonment, Ganji has recently staged a hunger strike which has alarmingly impacted his physical well-being.

Your Excellencies have recently voiced concern over Ganjis situation and issued statements calling on Irans judiciary officials to release him.

Your Excellencies,

Effort to free Ganji is a basic ethical and humanitarian duty for all Iranians and non-Iranians alike. As such Iranians, at home and abroad, are striving, alongside human rights organizations, to demand that Irans Judiciary officials find a solution to Ganjis plight.

Your Excellencies,

Ganji and defending Ganjis human rights are as important to all Iranians as protecting and safeguarding ethical and moral principles and national sovereignty. As such, Iranians will not allow outsiders to intervene in this realm.

Your Excellencies,

Iranians admire Ganji but they admire and appreciate the truth far more. And the truth is that Your Excellencies are not qualified to defend Ganji. How could the Iranians believe in your good will while the cries and grievances of the Guantanamo prisoners still ring in the ears of defenders of human rights and disrupt their peace and quiet?

How could the Iranians trust your good will and humanitarian intentions while, over the past three years, one hundred twenty political prisoners in Turkey have lost their lives amidst the deadly silence of all so-called defenders of human rights? And all they ever demanded was being transferred to another ward for which they staged hunger strikes, while their families looked on from outside the prison complex. Not only were these deaths ignored but also a year later Turkey was admitted into the European Union!

Your Excellencies,

Ganjis plight is the problem of the Iranians, the righteous, and the true believers in spirituality, ethics, and humanitarianism. Please allow us to solve our own problems.

Unfortunately your unsolicited intervention has not only failed to solve the problem but has actually escalated it, such that instead of channeling our energy toward helping Ganji, we now need to primarily focus on proving our antipathy against falsehood and deception.
