Olivet Street vs. CN Railway sign now

We, the tenants of Olivet Street and the surrounding area, feel the need for some form of resolution to the conflict regarding crossing the railroad tracks behind the buildings on Olivet Street. At this moment in time the railroad tracks are fenced off, but have had holes in them since November 2009. They were not touched until today, June 16 2010. This shows that they are not doing this in regards to the safety of people in the surrounding area, since they did not close them up during the most unsafe time of year; the winter. The wages spent employing repair men, and costs of materials to repair, spread over the last 3 years (when they started fixing the holes) would be significantly more than the cost of a fair, and safe solution to this problem. The proximity of Mumford Road to Olivet Street is one of the major deciding factors in renting apartments in the 7-8 apartment buildings located on Olivet, namely because of the stores (Sobeys, Walmart, Halifax Shopping Centre, etc.) being so close. The people of Olivet Street simply want a fair solution to this problem, other than "you snooze you lose". This would not only be beneficial to the residents, but also to CN Railway. If a structure/safe crossing section (like pedways or closing arms stating there's a train coming like many other spots found throughout HRM) were put in place, the holes would stop appearing in the fencing, saving CN lots of money, and everyone would be happy.

The goal of this petition is to receive enough signatures that it will not go unnoticed, and also show how serious of an issue this is to the residents of Olivet Street. If enough petitions are received, the petition along with the signatures will be sent to CN, as well as the elected council for this area. Hopefully those two parties will be able to come to a fair solution for all.
