NYU Faculty Support for Adjunct Colleagues sign now

We, the undersigned full-time faculty, staff and administrators at New York University, urge our administration to negotiate in good faith with the adjunct union (ACT-UAW Local 7902) to ensure a speedy resolution of the contract negotiations and offer a decent and dignified contract to our part-time colleagues.

Our part-time faculty teach, grade, advise, research and write alongside of us. We share classrooms and we share students. We do not share, however, decent compensation and job security. Yet, despite working for a less-than-living wage and no health insurance, never sure whetherthey will be rehired from semester-to-semester, our part-time colleagues continue to show devotion and commitment to teaching our students. They do this because they love their work.

Our colleagues passion, commitment, and devotion to teaching are qualities that should be acknowledged and rewarded, not exploited. We believe that New York University should be a common enterprise. But the integrity of the enterprise is severely compromised so long as our faculty are divided into first and second class citizens.

We find the administrations objections to theunion's contract proposals -- that it will bankrupt NYU, force tuition increases, and hand control of the curriculum over to adjuncts frankly, unconvincing. We believe that the university is not served by such claims that pander to fears rather than facts. The condition of adjunct labor and the dependency on its use is one of the dirty secrets of academe. We urge the administration to demonstrate that NYU is indeed a leadership university by demonstrating that leadership and giving our part-time colleagues the respect and the contract -- they deserve.
