Nottingham Carlton Cemetery's Garden of Rest sign now

Late 2003, Early 2004 The Nottingham Gedling Borough Council decided upon a plan to redesign the Nottingham Carlton Cemetery's Garden of Rest. Their aim was to enlarge and improve the area to make it more pleasant to visit and to accommodate a increased demand for the scattering of ashes they state that all vases and monuments will be kept in a safe place during improvement process and will be placed in alphabetical order within the stepped vase area, They also say that no soil will be removed from the site in the process and that the work will increase the area of flower beds available for scattering ashes, a stepped area will be created for vases and plaques and floral tributes, they will improve access, and will increased the security by reducing the height of the wall, provide a rose arbour with seating areas and a wildflower meadowland. You can read there post here: http://www.gedling.gov.uk/print/index/ac-home/ac-news-archive/ac-news-article.htm?newsid=9518 This sounds quite exciting that the work carried out would have made it an even better place than it was before... It clearly states that Improvement work has "already started to improve the area to make it a much more pleasant place to visit and to ensure that the increased demand for the scattering of ashes in this area can be met" Are you trying to say you actually want to destroy the surroundings and disturb the ashes that have been scattered in this area, "the garden of rest" to be quite honest isn't living up to its name, "All vases and monuments will be kept in a safe place during this time before being placed in alphabetical order within the stepped vase area. No soil will be removed from the area during this process." All vases will be kept in a safe place and will be placed in alphabetical order. OH what a joke. after work had begun down in the garden of rest we took a visit all headstones had been moved just as stated in your article away from the working area, however I'm sure that afternoon we spent approximately 2 hours searching to later find that the two stones once placed together were at opposite corners of the garden, which is perfectly fine with your planned alphabetical system, well if you take into account they were placed in no order what so ever just scatted at random a couple looking badly damaged not to mention nowhere near the ashes, i would like someone to be able to prove that NO soil had been moved from the area in the process of improving Carlton cemetery's garden of rest. you mention to "Increase the area of flower beds available for the scattering of ashes" OH.. scatter the ashes into a bush which last time looked pretty dead.. Another point i would like to bring to your attention you mention to "Improve access, especially for disabled visitors" Now correct me if I'm wrong but the garden of rest actually was on two levels which were accessible via a ramp OR use of the steps, it seems to me it was already suitable for disabled visitors. also "Improve security by reducing the height of the wall" hows that improving security as far as i can remember the wall has been pulled very low down no need to use the entrance anymore its small enough to step over step all over scattered ashes and get to the headstones. Now it does say if i have any enquiries to contact the company's involved on the given telephone numbers but as the work has been completed it seems pretty pointless contacting them, whoever designed this obviously had no-one lay to rest in the area. It seems to me a money making idea to fit more ashes in and make more money, while also destroying an area which gave me a reason to visit, there doesn't seem much point going to see a headstone standing in line on a concrete paving shelf having no idea where the ashes actually are. Upon visiting the site after quite some time i arrived to find the Nottingham Bough Council Maintenance team armed with rakes and garden leaf blowers raking over and then using the leaf blowers on the areas which are for the scattering of ashes. Now i have emailed them and I'm currently awaiting response, i know threes nothing that can be done to get everything back however with enough people you never know it could stop something like this happening again.
