No US Missile Defense Program in Canada sign now

As a Canadian I do not want our country to join the United States Missile Defense Program. And in so much, it is my belief that our elected parliament should hold a binding vote on this matter.

We the citizens of this nation have to send a clear, succinct message to our government. We do not want US Missiles in Canada.

I do not feel that our government is being neither open nor honest with regards to this issue. As a minority government, they have made it known that a vote in parliament on this subject would be non-binding. During the election the Liberal Party avoided this issue, or made inferences that Canada would not participate. Now it would seem there is a movement to ratify it and to move forward in a partnership. It is my ascertain that Prime Minister Martin has been entertaining this matter without public or parliamentary involvement.

We have a long legacy of programs such as the DEW Line, Pine Tree Line and the deployment of American forces in Canada. We the Canadians have become the benefactors of numerous highly contaminated sites such as the former bases in Goose Bay and Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador. There are former radar sites across our north where toxins such as PCBs were either poured onto the ground or dumped without regard, including our Arctic Archipelago. The clean up of these sites is the responsibility of the host nation, Canada. Ironically, the cost of this cleanup is predominantly the responsibility of National Defence. Costs which are directly subtracted from the operating and purchasing budgets of the Canadian Forces. A departmental budget that annually runs a deficit and recent increases in funding barely cover the total budget requirements to maintain our depleted and diminishing Forces.

Many Canadians are unaware that we have in the past harbored and maintained nuclear weapons in Canada with our American partners. Under both the Bomark missile program (yes a previous Missile Defense Program) and the operation of the CF-101 Voodoo aircraft, we had nuclear weapons in Canada.

And once again we are embarking down a path without the involvement of the Canadian public. To participate in a program that will cost the taxpayers of this nation dearly. See tracts of our land seconded to a foreign power and used for purposes that we will have only token involvement in. And ultimately will inherit whatever legacy is left behind.

Please join with me and say to Prime Minister Martin, NO to the US Missile Defense Program in Canada.
