No to Toronto Police wearing uniforms and carrying guns when protesting on their own behalf sign now

As residents of Toronto we the undersigned are writing to express our grave concern over the recent conduct of some members of the Toronto Police Service. Contrary to explicit orders made by Police Chief Bill Blair some officers chose to participate in a recent public protest while armed and in uniform. These officers were not on duty and were marching en masse in public to protest the status of collective bargaining negotiations with the City of Toronto.

As residents of Toronto we deplore this abuse of the privilege granted to officers to bear arms. Police are trusted with overwhelming power and authority in their mandate to serve and protect the public. A decision by officers to disobey orders given, in the interest of the public, by the Chief of Police is a flagrant abuse of the power with which police have been entrusted by the public.

As residents of Toronto we believe that the decision by the Toronto Police Association to support and encourage members of the Toronto Police Service in their disobedience of an order given in the publics interest by the Chief of Police was a serious error.

The position adopted by the Toronto Police Association suggests that the Association does not recognize the gravity of the decision by members of the Service to march in public, in defence of their own interests, while armed and in uniform.

The position adopted by the Association suggests that the Association does not understand the significance of the rights and responsibilities with which officers have been entrusted nor does the association recognize the Toronto Police Services ultimate accountability to the public.

The insensitivity of the Association to the public concern posed by officers participating in a protest while armed and in uniform, but not on duty, encourages the publics belief in the most negative stereotypes concerning members of the Toronto Police Service. The decision by the Association to condone this abuse of authority serves only to support negative beliefs held by some members of the public regarding the police.

We the undersigned residents of Toronto believe that the position adopted by the Toronto Police Association does not engender the trust of the public and does not support police officers of integrity who rely on the trust of the public to perform their jobs.

We the undersigned call on the Toronto Police Association to acknowledge its error in judgement with a public apology to the residents of Toronto.

Given the power held by the Police, some of the undersigned have chosen to sign the petition with Anonymous Resident and to provide only their postal code. Email addresses are required to verify unique signatures but are kept confidential at the request of the signer.
