No To Sainsbury in Kendal sign now

We, the undersigned, wish to say NO to the proposed Sainsbury supermarket on the grounds of Kendal Cricket Club.

Kendal is already served adequately by three supermarkets and a host of small stores and shops. Every small local shop and trader will be hit hard by the ruthless practices of the large supermarket chains. The variety, distinctiveness and character of our town will also be hit hard by the building of yet more supermarket chains.

For every pound we spend, local shops employ more people than supermarkets. A new Sainsbury will not create any new jobs but will reduce them. Local shops, run by local people, also keep more money in the local area instead of whisking them away to city shareholders.

The proposed supermarket is on green, open land. We need to protect our green spaces for the enjoyment of all residents of Kendal and not continue to build uneccessary developments on them.

It is for these reasons, and many more, that we object to the proposed new Sainsbury store in Kendal.

I believe that Kendal is adequately covered for supermarkets. Therefore, to take a virgin site for such a project as Sainbury's propose would deny the town the opportunity to satisfy more vital public needs.

Supermarkets make profits for their shareholders by taking more out of the local economy than they put in. We have more than enough of them in Kendal. Use local shops and more of your money will be recirculated in the local economy and it will create more

Address Grayrigg There is no need for yet another supermarket in Kendal. We need to keep Kendal town alive and any such development on the outskirts will do nothing to help that. It's local businesses and not Sainsbury's shareholders who need our support

Address Mint Street, Kendal Kendal's roads are already officially 'full'. The impact of the additional cross town traffic this development would cause is unacceptable. In addition, 'edge of town' developments are known to drain trade from town centres.
