No More Plastic Bottles at JCCC sign now

We, the undersigned, strongly urge our administration at Johnson County Community College to replace plastic beverage bottles on campus with aluminum cans for the following reasons:

- Every piece of plastic ever manufactured is still on the planet.
- Manufacturing and transporting plastic bottles consumes significantly more energy than aluminum cans.
- Every year more than 17 million barrels of oil are used to produce plastic beverage bottles. That is enough fuel to power over 100,000 cars for a year.
- When a plastic bottle is recycled, the plastic becomes a lower grade and is no longer able to become another bottle. This means that virgin materials are used each time a new bottle is produced. Cans are able to be made from 100\% post-recycled materials, unlike plastic bottles.
- Research has shown that if a plastic bottle is left in the sun or heated in any way (i.e. vending machines near windows) cancer-causing chemicals can be released into the beverage.
- The money made from recycling at Johnson County Community College goes toward scholarships for JCCC students. Recycling aluminum is much more profitable than plastic, making funds more accessible to those in need.

As JCCC continues to work towards a more sustainable campus, we insist that plastic bottles no longer be used in vending machines and be replaced with aluminum cans.

Be green and save money. Cans are cheaper than bottles to purchase anyways!
