No Marlins Stadium Built With Public Money sign now

To: Miami and Miami-Dade Elected and Appointed Officials

WHEREAS Property taxes Statewide are slated to be cut AND

WHEREAS Miami-Dade County stands to loose a lot of funding derived from property taxes AND

WHEREAS Various capital improvement projects are currently underway and/or proposed, and these projects will require a substantial amount of money to complete (Airport expansion, MIC, Seaport tunnel, all the bonds recently issued by popular vote) AND

WHEREAS All this money has to come from somewhere, and if property taxes are cut back all these projects and debts will still have to be paid for somehow AND

WHEREAS the approximately $88 million that the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County had earmarked for renovations to the Orange Bowl can, and should, now me used to close the existing $30 million gap in the $490 million plan to build a retractable-roof ballpark for the Florida Marlins

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY PETITION THE FOLLOWING:

(1) Elected and Appointed Officials of the City of Miami
(2) Elected and Appointed officials from Miami-Dade County
(3) The Legislator of the Great State of Florida
(4) The Governor of the Great State of Florida
(5) The Owner and Staff of the Florida Marlins Baseball Club
(6) The Commissioner and Staff of Major League Baseball, Inc.

To take the approximately $88 million that the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County had earmarked for renovations to the Orange Bowl and redirect that money to something more useful to the County. Miami-Dade County needs that $88 million for other projects, and these other projects will serve the public good far more than a sandbox for men to play games in will.

Attendance at Marlins games is always very low, unless they happen to make it into the playoffs. But the next season, if the team does not win a lot of games attendance drops right back off.

If the Marlins want a stadium, they can build it themselves without public assistance. The team can finance the project privately, since it is a private business. The County can then make money leasing the land the stadium sits on and use that money for the greater public good.

If the County is going to invest any public money in a retractable roof baseball stadium, then the deal should hinge on Miami-Dade County being a partial owner of the team, and Miami-Dade County should be entitled to a portion of all revenue generated by The Marlins, the new stadium, and everything else. The ownership stake in the team should be equal to the percentage of funds the County puts towards the construction of any stadium.
