NHL Teams Should Play Every Other Team Twice Per Season -- Home and Away -- sign now

"I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.

I am not quite certain that the present regulations governing the arrangement of matches give entire satisfaction, and it would be worth considering whether they could not be arranged so that each team would play once at home and once at the place where their opponents hail from."

-- Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada

Since the National Hockey League has assumed custodianship of Lord Stanley's Cup, the NHL has forgotten Lord Stanley's vision embodied by his above statement. Recently, a court ruling found the NHL did not possess sole rights to the Stanley Cup, and that it should still be given to the best hockey team in a challenge or tournament situation in the event that the NHL not play.

Lord Stanley was dissatisfied with the organization of hockey in the Dominion at the time he made his edict, prompting the legacy he has left for North American hockey. In his closing statement, Lord Stanley proclaimed that each team should play one home game and one away game. In recent years, the NHL has adopted an unbalanced schedule where teams of one division will play only 4 of 5 divisions that are not their own. This year, the NHL has revised the schedule to leave it still unbalanced, but that each team will play each other at least once per year.

This arrangement, and previous arrangements are contrary to Lord Stanley's vision, and as such, the NHL has again failed in its duty as custodians of the Cup. We, the fans of hockey and the NHL, demand that the NHL schedule be further balanced such that each team plays every other team in the league at least TWICE per year, once at home and once on the road.
